If
ever there was a day that all lovers felt special, it is Valentine's
Day. If ever there was a day for people to tell each other of how
much they appreciate one another, it is Valentine's Day.
Of
course we should show our love and feelings toward each other every
day, but there is a day specially set aside for us to show our appreciation
even more and that's why we send flowers or give chocolates. People
who do these are not mad. They know the value or importance of making
that someone they love feel special. But of course, we cannot
send flowers or chocolates everyday, and that's when saying or expressing
your love becomes important, over and above any gift that you may
give someone.
But how did this Valentine's day come about. There
are many legends, and Harvey feels that people should know the legend
behind every story or practice.
The
holiday of Valentine's Day probably derives its origins from the
ancient Roman feast of Lupercalia. In the early days of Rome,
fierce wolves roamed the woods nearby. The Romans called upon one
of their gods, Lupercus, to keep the wolves away. A festival held
in honor of Lupercus was celebrated on February 15th.
Reader : But Valentine's Day is 14th Feb.
Harvey : Patience! Read on!.
One of the customs of the young people was name-drawing.
On the eve of the festival of Lupercalia the names of Roman girls
were written on slips of paper and placed into jars. Each young
man drew a slip. The girl whose name was chosen was to be his sweetheart
for the year.
Reader : Ya? But how did it become known
as Valentine's Day?
Harvey : Hai! Ya! Read on – Lah!
Legend has it that the holiday became Valentine's
Day
after
a priest named Valentine. Valentine was a priest in Rome.
At the time Christianity was a new religion. The Emperor at that
time, Claudius II, ordered the Roman soldiers NOT to marry or become
engaged. Claudius believed that as married men, his soldiers would
want to stay home with their families rather than fight his wars.
Valentine defied the Emperor's decree and secretly married the young
couples. He was eventually arrested, imprisoned, and put to death
Valentine
was beheaded on February 14th, the eve of the Roman holiday Lupercalia.
Some time after his death, Valentine was named a saint. As Rome
became more Christian, the priests moved the spring holiday from
the 15th of February to the 14th - Valentine's Day. Now the holiday
honored Saint Valentine instead of Lupercus .
So lovers all over the world in a sense remember St.
Valentine and also, I would like to add a whole lot of people who
have contributed to good relationships with others throughout history.
Do not for once thing that Valentine is only romantic love. It is
more than that.
Do say something nice to the people around you, at least
on this wonderful day.
